The search for a beater plow truck led me down a different road today. What if I could get a bada** work truck that could also haul everything I ever need to haul including my kids, dogs, bikes, boat, several yards of gravel, AND a kitchen sink?

BEHOLD, 23 FEET OF FORD:

Kinja'd!!!

Oh, you have a big bad F-250? 350? Super Duty? That’s cute. WEAK SAUCE!

2010 Ford F550

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Never mind that I’d need two parking spaces and I’d have the approximate turning radius of a small apartment building, this thing is awesome. Keep the dump body because shoveling gravel out the back of a truck is for suckers. Come to think of it, unloading groceries by hand is for suckers, too. Hit the button, dump ‘em out on the ground, done.

Plus I had a work truck once with that V10 and I loved it. I suppose it would work a little harder to move this beast compared to the bare-bones single cab radio-only manual-everything F350 we had, but still.

Compared to the price of a new Suburban, or any truck for that matter, this is a smokin’ deal by comparison. It’s like the price of a 13-year old Tacoma. Can you put a 10' plow on your Tacoma?! I DIDN’T THINK SO

Why gas though?

I’m guessing to avoid the 6.0. How long did they produce that?

ETA: Nope, the 6.0 was gone by then so you have a solid question.

Maybe for easier starts in the cold?

Cheaper, easier to repair, that’s my guess

That’s a solid NP. If you can convince the wife, that’s the best plow truck you could get

I’d buy this if it was a v8 but the v10 can’t be easier or cheaper.

The V8 in these is utter crap. Not enough power, terrible economy, trouble prone. The V10 is a much better option IMO.

That’s a whole lot of truck.  And looks like a good deal to boot.  You’d never want for anything with that truck.

I presume you saw this one? I know more than you want to spend, but you could see how desperate he is to sell. https://nh.craigslist.org/hvo/d/south-royalton-05-f350-diesel-plow-truck/6974668309.html

Not the best looking truck, but would probably serve your purposes.

What LV said, it’s durable but can actually move out of its own way

The 6.4 that followed the 6.0 wasn’t much better.

Honestly, after owning a 6.0PS, they’re an impressive engine once you take care of their known flaws. Loads of power, amazing fuel economy, sound great.

I’m not a fan, but that’s because the one my dad just dumped was a never-ending source of issues for him. I’m sure others have had better experiences.

Our was at first, then I researched and fixed all the common issues. After that it was just normal Diesel things.

Now to be clear I meant I’d buy it as in I’d believe the theory that it’s cheaper and easier to repair. Not that I’d buy this truck. I would not buy this truck no matter what power plant was in it.

There is no application in which this should not be a diesel.

Yeah, that guy’s nuts. Needs transmission lines, front axle u-joints, the bed is falling off (don’t really care about that) but with all that he’s still asking $4,500 if you want the plow to come with it.

It’s walking a tough line between having decent value if repaired properly, but for the price, it’s too much for a beater. Fix the issues and he’d probably get $6k for it.

Totally NP, but I would in fact struggle to find a place to park it at work, especially with that plow on it

Diesel trucks are way more expensive than gas, that’s probably why.

But are cheaper to run and maintain especially if you already have diesel mechanics on your pay roll because you maintain a fleet of full sized plows/dump trucks/ tractors .

My old man taught me about plow trucks. His barely ran, had to heat, and sucked balls in every category. That’s too nice to be a plow truck. His current plow truck is a 80s (?) bronco, full size, with holes in the floor board. Picked it up for 5 00 bucks and got 1K in free tires when the whole Firestone fiasco was happening.

His choices aren’t always the best though............

The 6.4 was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay worse. Bulletproofing a 6.0 is a pretty safe option. Bulletproofing a 6.4 is removing the 6.4.

The 6.0 was much better than the 6.4, in fact, supposedly that’s what killed Ford’s partnership with Navistar. Not the engine being bad, Ford refused to keep paying them for it, because they were dealing with so many warranty repairs and buybacks. The 6.4 isn't really an engine you can bulletproof like the 6.0, unless you completely build it.

Well, my father’s current truck should have failed inspection 5 years ago at least. But I made the mistake (?) of introducing him to a friend who was... less scrupulous with his inspections. So now the truck just had a series of issues since then, including tearing up a front driveshaft last year, and a huge coolant leak, not to mention a long list of other “quirks” that come from a life of hard use. That truck only had 90k or so, all of which were difficult I think.

The one before that was even worse. And before that? MUCH worse.

I don’t know why, but I’m glad to see used up trucks. Beaten, battered, bruised, barely soldiering on. They been used in the manner they were intended and then some.
